(More customer reviews)We have a 13' Intek above ground pool which came with a very flimsy and poorly designed filter. We were constantly needing to change or clean the actual filter and it would get clogged very quickly which would cause vapor lock and lack of circulation.Although this unit cost more than the pool itself, we have been using the pool for three years now and I hope to get a fourth out of it, at least. Therefore I hope this filter will end up being worth the money.
The early results are very good! The pool water is very clear and the unit is quiet and, relative to the Intek one, very powerful.I think this is the perfect solution for anyone with one of these types of pools, especially since the included filters are so horrible.
That said, set-up was unnecessarily difficult due to poor instructions.I am a pretty big do-it-yourself guy and can figure most things out.Unfortunately this comes with a bag of parts and adapters and the directions do a very poor job of guiding you or even listing what parts are what. Here are some helpful tips if you purchase this:
1. You need to buy special sand for this filter. It is called #20 Silica sand and is apparently made for pool filters.Trouble is you don't know this until you get the filter and only pool type specialty stores carry it. Fortunately there was one in my area, but it would have been good to know I needed this before the filter came. For the record, the sand was $12 for 50 lbs.
2. The instructions call for 26 lbs of sand.I am filling this thing up in my backyard and don't happen to have a scale, never mind one which could be used on grass.Seems like it would have been helpful to also include a "fill sand to here" line inside the unit which, of course, there wasn't.I ended up eyeballing.
3. There are several parts which appear to be adapters for different size filter tubes but there are no instructions related to these at all. There isn't even a parts list in the instructions. My tubes seemed a little too large for the attachments but none of the adapters were a fit.In the end I had two adapters, two rubber washers and one or two assorted pieces remaining and have no idea what they are for.
4. The tube part that connects the motor to the base is fairly easy to attach but the visual instructions fail to include this one little rubber seal.I hooked the whole thing up and then saw a leak from that area.I looked at the instructions again and they said 'don't forget to use the seal' kind of hidden in the text(no picture of the seal and no parts list to reference). It wasn't hard to figure out what piece it was, but it would have saved some trouble and time if it was shown in the instructions.
5. As I mentioned, my tubes didn't quite fit and there were no rubber o-rings which might have helped make a good seal.I didn't want to try and over-tighten the whatever those things are called that go around the hose. The solution was electrical tape.I wrapped a few layers around the receptor tubes on the filter and then my hoses made a much better seal.
All together, not including the trip to the store for the special sand, it took me more than 1.5 hours to set this up.With good instructions it would have taken 30 minutes and a lot less aggravation.
